Oat Straw and how to use it (infusion and tincture)

Oat straw properties

Oat straw comes from green oats, also known as Avena sativa. Oat straw is soothing and nourishing. Regular use promotes a strong nervous system and a balanced endocrine system. Oat straw eases spasms and inflammation. It helps with bone density (as it is a good source of calcium), memory, weak digestion and much more. You can order oat straw through most healthfood stores.

 

How to make a strong oat straw infusion

A strong infusion extracts more nutrients than a tincture and more medicinal qualities than a tea.  

 Ingredients

  • 30g of dried oat straw

  • 1liter filtered water

  • Heatproof liter jar or teapot with lid.

 Method

  1. Put the herb into container

  2. Fill container with hot water just off the boil and cover.

  3. Infuse for at least 4 hours or overnight. Then strain.

  4. Most infusions are short-lived; they stay good for only two or three days in the fridge.

  5. Usual dose of infusion is 1-2 cups (250-500 ml) a day, taken hot, chilled, or at room temperature. Infusions may be seasoned with sweeteners, milk, or any other additions that pleases your taste. Infusions can also be used as soup stocks, bath waters, hair rinses and facial washes.

 

Tinctures

 A tincture is made by steeping the dried or fresh herb in a mixture of alcohol and water. The alcohol extracts the plant’s active ingredients and also preserves the tincture. A tincture will keep for a couple of years. For home use vodka is ideal in a tincture as it contains few or no additives. Always read the label!

 

Standard quantities

  • 200g dried herb or 400g fresh herb

  • 1 litre of 25% alcohol/water mixture (e.g. dilute a 1 litre bottle of 37.5% vodka with 500ml water)

 Method

  1. Put the herb into a large jar and cover with the alcohol/water mixture.

  2. Seal the jar and store in a cool place for two weeks.

  3. Shake everyday.

  4. Fit a jelly bag or muslin into a measuring jar or winepress and pour the mixture through. Pour into clean, dark glass bottles using a funnel if necessary. Label!

  5. Take one teaspoon (5ml) three times daily in water or herbal tea.
